The Mig-21 has serious problems when it comes to the modelling of the gunsight. The real life modes and limitations are not adhered to and it can do things that it shouldn't, while also being somewhat unreliable at the same time. It's also one of the earliest 3rd party DCS modules and it shows.
Every time you try to duel another radar-guided missile with it, you lose. Giving the MiG-29 the 27ER means it can now actually climb and compete with F-16s and F-14s, giving it more options in matches otherwise dominated by those American aircraft.
